Many factors should be evaluated including temperature, vibration, process conditions, pulsation and corrosion, but by carefully considering the 7 key factors outlined below, the chances of correct selection will increase significantly.
The process medium to which the gauge will be exposed is especially important when using a thin walled Bourdon tube because, if the wrong materials are selected, corrosion may occur which could lead to catastrophic failure. Materials which display the essential combination of properties (good spring memory, easy to form, easy to join, reasonably priced) are phosphor bronze, 316 stainless steel and Monel. Where these materials can’t satisfy the application, a diaphragm seal (gauge isolator) can be added to prevent the process media from contacting the Bourdon tube. This protects the gauge from corrosion attack, and also prevents viscous or dirty media from clogging the small bore Bourdon tube. The only limitation in using a diaphragm seal is that it typically degrades the accuracy of the pressure gauge by an additional 0,5 % of the full scale deviation. Pressure Gauge Range
It is important to select a pressure range which accommodates all anticipated pressure swings, and which prevents excessive needle movement. It is recommended to confine normal operating pressure to 25 % – 75 % of scale. With fluctuating pressures (e.g. pulsation caused by a pump or compressor), the maximum operating pressure should b
elower (50 % of the full range). Gauges in severe service should be liquid filled and throttle
dto reduce Bourdon tube stresses. To minimize sensing element stress and to extend the life of the gauge use internal throttle screws, pulsation dampeners, pressure snubbers, gauge savers or diaphragm seals.
Crystal also offers CPF fittings: a patented line of calibration and test medium pressure fittings, equipped with a self-venting weep and replaceable O-ring that allows leak-free up to 10000 psi with only finger-tightening.
Pressure calibration involves delicate and careful measurements with manometers or deadweight testers. This was never practical or reliable due to environmental factors and changes.
Crystal Engineering was founded and used the combination of two emerging technologies based on silicon: large-scale integrated circuits (LSI) and MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) pressure sensors. This enabled Crystal to design and develop digital pressure calibrators and gauges that are portable and easy to use but with better accuracy and reliability for field use.
LSI allowed low-cost analog to digital conversion and low power (i.e., battery) operation, while the silicon sensors offered incredible repeatability at very competitive costs.
Crystal core technology is based on MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) pressure transducers. The silicon in silicon pressure sensors is a crystalline structure (hence our name: Crystal Engineering). Unlike metal, crystalline structures have virtually unmeasurable hysteresis and are manufactured using methods similar to semiconductors, with the addition of micro-machining to fabricate the sensing diaphragm. These silicon-based sensors are highly repeatable but sensitive to temperature and somewhat non-linear.
Combining the silicone pressure sensors with digital signal processing techniques, the result is very accurate pressure measuring equipment that’s linear and not affected by temperature.
Crystal products are very accurate. Our specifications are in “% of reading” (just like most digital multimeters and deadweight testers) instead of a “% of full scale”. This means that any of our digital pressure gauges or pressure calibrators can replace several ordinary mechanical or competitive calibrators. Saving you time and money in maintaining equipment.
Pump Systems
Here is what you need to know about our new Pump Systems:
Crystal Hanging Strap
Keep your nVision safe!
You can now free up your hands by hanging your gauge while you work. The new strap kit (part # 5203) connects to the Velcro straps included with the XP2i, M1, or 30 Series. The nVision strap kit (part # 5177) uses the same strap, but requires an additional bracket to be installed on the back of the nVision.
The strap kit can hold up to 2.7kg, allowing you to hang any of our products installed on either of our hand pumps.
NVISION - REFERENCE PRESSURE RECORDER
Accurate enough to replace a deadweight tester
Rugged enough to sit in 3 feet of water
Portable enough to complete calibrations anywhere
NEW 3RD GENERATION XP2I
One Year Recording! One Set of Batteries!
Our most popular gauge is now even better. We added 32 000 recordable data points and a battery-optimising Ultra-Low Power Mode that lets you record for one full year on a single set of AA batteries.
This rugged digital test gauge is rated Intrinsically Safe, submersible in 3 feet of water, and drop-tested from 6 feet – all while offering consistent, temperature-compensated 0.1% reading accuracy up to 10 000 psi.

Digital Pressure Gauge Protective Boot - 2nd/3rd Generation Gauge (No Black Gasket around Gauge)
A Skydrol-compatible elastomeric boot to increase shock resistance.
Hard Carrying Case (egg crate foam)
Universal AC Power Supply
Includes a set of plugs permitting use worldwide. In the event of a power failure, an XP2i powered by the AC power supply will automatically switch to its internal batteries.
There is no more straightforward, intrinsically safe pressure recording system!
The DataLoggerXP software*, in tandem with the XP2i digital pressure gauge with a purchased DataLoggerXP firmware upgrade, forms an integrated data-logging solution by collecting, saving and transferring data to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. With the XP2i's long battery life, you can record up to 32 000 pressure measurements over an entire year without needing external power supplies or battery replacements. Since the XP2i can measure vacuum, you can capture pressure to vacuum transitions and much more.
M1 DIGITAL PRESSURE GAUGE
The M1 digital pressure gauge maintains 0.2% reading accuracy from -10Ëš to 50ËšC. Accuracy is not affected by dropping, overpressure, vibration, temperature, or rapid pressure change. Available as a 30 psi digital pressure manometer.
One wide-range M1 digital pressure gauge replaces up to five 0.25% mechanical gauges with 0.2% of reading accuracy.
Calibration toolbox in the palm of your hand!
The 30 Series is a wide-range pressure calibrator that fits easily into your shirt pocket. Its internal sensors give you 0.05% reading accuracy and resist damage from overpressure.
